The Walled City

“ Conegliano is a castle which can be reached on one side of the surrounding walls by crossing the waters of the Monticano… This castle is situated on a small hill, and here lives the Podesta; the land extends below it for half a mile… The city has two gates: Monticano Gate on one side and Rujo Gate on the other. It has two beautiful villages and a lovely wide street with fine houses (Contrada Granda)… and the castle has two wings of walls descending the hill towards the land. It has the Church of San Francesco… and on the hill of Conegliano in the courtyard of the castle there is the parish church of San Leonardo…”.
